Avela Mpongo (27) is a young man with a heart for Knysna Sedgefield Hospice. He has entered the Momentum Knysna Cycle Tour 50km road race as an activist for Knysna Sedgefield Hospice to help raise funds for our organisation.
Avela works as a community health care worker in the White Location area and cares for our patients in the comfort of their own homes, by riding a bicycle on a daily basis, often on dirt roads which has made him fit enough to participate in this year’s race, his very first!
Avela sees 80 members of the community per month and he covers a huge area on his bicycle, helping us to stay true to our mission statement, to serve the community by providing palliative, home based care for persons with progressive, incurable and chronic debilitating illnesses. Our holistic care extends to the families prior to and during the bereavement period. This is achieved by medically directed nurse and social worker coordinated care to meet the physical, spiritual and psychosocial needs of patients who meet our referral criteria irrespective of race, age, creed or gender.
Although Avela is a beginner, he is fit, able and excited to raise money for our organisation while doing what he loves, riding!
