Stepping Stone Hospice’s ‘new-look’ Fundraising, Marketing and Retail Team

Since opening its doors in 2013, Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services has grown at a rapid rate. And as a Non-Profit Organization that receives zero financial assistance from government, the organization relies a great deal on the generosity of the community to keep its doors open.

This year marks an especially big one as Stepping Stone is faced with the mammoth task of raising the funds needed to extend their In-Patient Unit with a further 12 rooms in order to cope with the increasing need for palliative care in the community.

Enter the Fundraising team of Fundraising Manager, Marietjie Tame, who has been with Stepping Stone Hospice since the very beginning, and newly-appointed Marketing Manager, Kerry Johnston, previously a volunteer at Stepping Stone, who has now joined the team full time.

As Fundraising Manager, Marietjie oversees all of Stepping Stone’s fundraising endeavours, where the aim is always to raise an awareness and understanding of hospice and the work it does, as well as bring in as much money as possible to keep the organization afloat. “The need for an extra pair of hands became apparent towards the end of last year when we held a strategy meeting deciding on the way forward for Stepping Stone Hospice,” says Marietjie.

“With demand for our services on the increase, so becomes the need to know more – what is it we do, what are the services, how can we help? And, of course, the need for more funds as we have no option but to increase our facilities,” explains Marietjie. “Our fundraising budget this year runs into the millions, therefore the need to increase and re-strategize the fundraising team.”

Says Stepping Stone CEO, Tersia Burger: “Your efforts become diluted when only one person is expected to do it all. Having already worked with us as a volunteer, writing news articles and helping with other marketing material and social media, Kerry understands the essence and heart of hospice and we are delighted to have her on board.”

Another reshuffle within the organization sees Brenda Peach move from Events Manager into a new role as Retail Manager, overseeing the day-to-day running of Stepping Stone’s growing charity shop, Ububele, which has become a source of steady income for Stepping Stone. A second charity shop is now in the pipeline with Brenda heading it up. “I already have a vision for how it will look – warm and welcoming with a range of good-quality goods in-keeping with our modern and forward-thinking hospice.”
