Close to 2000 walkers took to the streets in Bedfordview on Sunday 30 July 2017.
Because of their commitment and the hard work of the Shuffling Walking Team committee, an incredible amount of R366 000 was raised of which R80 000 was recently donated to Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services in New Market Park in Alberton.
Maria da Silva, co-founder of the Shuffling Walking Team, explains that various non-profit organizations who mostly deal with cancer related issues, are chosen annually to benefit from the walk. “Cancer is just something that has impacted many of us on our committee and in my case, I lost most of my family to cancer. So if we can help organizations who help those facing life-limiting illnesses, then that’s what we do,” she says.
This initiative came about some six years ago when Maria and her friend, Marinda Garrana, started walking together and participating in various fundraising walks. “We decided to organize our own fundraising walk in Bedfordview and today, our committee consists of 16 members, all of whom work extremely hard on this fundraiser – total dedication”, says Maria.
“We’ve heard so many good things about Stepping Stone Hospice and the incredible work done by the staff,” explains Maria. “This is the second year we’ve chosen them as a beneficiary and we also need to thank them for the work they do and the services they render to the patients and families.”
CEO of Stepping Stone Hospice, Tersia Burger, could hardly contain her emotions when the cheque was handed over. “A team of Stepping Stone Hospice, myself included, did the 7km walk on the day and the spirit of generosity and friendship on the day is something I will not forget easily. Through your commitment to our cause, we can keep our doors open,” she said.
