Stories of Compassion: Walking in someone else’s shoes

Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.

When one shows compassion there is no boundary to it, it is about the actual action that is done no matter how big or small. Our feature story today is about two staff members at HPCA ( Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa) and no matter how small the deed is, if compassion is shown- it must be noticed and appreciated.

HPCA staff member, Nicola GunnClark had the unfortunate incident of her shoe breaking at work. She didn’t have another pair of shoes with her and had to walk barefoot around the office.

Delshe Dawn, being a work colleague and friend to Nicola saw her walking barefoot and being the compassionate woman that she is, borrowed her a spare pair of shoes for the rest of the day.As a result of this gesture, Nicola did not have to walk around the office barefoot anymore.

No matter how big or small if compassion is showed it must be noticed. If you have a compassionate story to share, email Shaun Thomas (Marketing Intern): shaun@hpca.co.za
