CPD Symposium – Kimberley

CPD Symposium – Tersia and Motlalentoa attended the CPD Symposium held in Kimberley, where Dr Aaron Motsoaledi presented on NHI and Dr Kantani (representing the APCC) spoke about Palliative Care in the communities.

Dr Kantani posed a question to this well-attended symposium. He asked who had been trained in Palliative Care.  Not one hand went up.

Dr Kantani was the only PC trained person in a room full of doctors and was faced with a barrage of questions (as were Motlalentoa and Tersia after the Symposium).  There was a “hunger” for more information and an absolute consensus that there was a desperate need for palliative care in the region.  The APCC have already received emails requesting training information.

Public hospital in Kuruman

Tersia and Motlalentoa went to visit the public hospital in Kuruman.  One of the doctors and a social worker had completed the Introduction to Palliative Care and expressed a keen interest in the Diploma Course in Palliative Care.  The amazing thing was that Eureka moment when doctors realise there is another alternative (home based care) to keeping sick (palliative) patients in a hospital bed. A very positive meeting.
