In response to an article in our local paper concerning Fika Dlomo, It was noted that he had cancer and was in need of urgent assistance.
Phyllip Mvundla, one of our home based care givers and enrolled nurse, Monica Nzimande travelled through to Kwambotho on the same day to conduct a first assessment at the patient’s home, and to speak to his father who is the main care giver. The patient was bed ridden, lying on a mattress outside and in a lot of pain. Through the first assessment it was discovered that Fika, in actual fact was suffering from TB in the bone and did not have cancer.
On 16 October 2017, the patient was taken through to St. Andrews Hospital and the assistant manager, Sr. Magubane and her staff are commended for their efficiency and kindness when receiving the patient.
The outcome of this intervention is that Fika Dlomo will be transferred through to King George hospital in Durban by ambulance where he will receive treatment for TB. The team at South Coast Hospice sincerely hope that he completes his treatment as TB doesn’t mean a death sentence.
